Eliminating Zika and Dengue in your own Backyard

  James Cook University is working with Eliminate Dengue to help combat dengue and Zika in our community and,eventually, around the world.

  ทางมหาวิทยาลัย James Cook University ตอนนี้กำลังทำงานด้วยกันกับ Eliminate Dengue เพื่อต่อสู้กับโรคไข้เลือดออกและไข้ Zika ในออสเตรเลีย และก็หวังว่าจะไปกำจัดโรคร้ายเหล่านี้ทั่วโลกด้วย

 Mosquitoes are known for their ability to spread deadly diseases to human. Mosquito-borne tropical diseases like Zika and Dengue fever cause a lot of death.

  เป็นที่รู้กันว่ายุงสามารถแพร่กระจายโรคร้ายทั้งสู่มาคน โรคที่มียุงเป็นพานะนำโรคอย่างไข้ Zika และไข้เลือดออกเป็นสาเหตุของการตายมากมาย

Dengue infects an estimated 390 million people around the world each year, while the effects of Zika virus have been well documented in the past few months. 

   มีผู้ติดเชื้อไข้เลือดออก 390 ล้านคนทั่วโลกในแต่ละปี และการระบาดของไวรัส Zika เองก็มีให้เห็นกันในช่วงหลายเดือนที่ผ่านมา 

 James Cook University and Eliminate Dengue are working together to combat these diseases

They both develop this Mozzie Box, which is believed to be the solution to the diseases. 

  ทั้งสองหน่วยงานร่วมกันพัฒนา Mozzie Box (Mozzie เป็นแสลงออสซี่หมายถึง Mosquito = ยุง ; Mozzie Box : กล่องยุง) และเชื่อว่า Mozzie Box น่าจะกลายเป็นวิธีแก้ปัญหาโรคร้ายเหล่านี้

These Mozzie Boxes are growing and releasing mosquitoes that carry Wolbachia, naturally occurring bacteria that reduce the ability of mosquitoes to pass some diseases between people.

  Mozzie Boxes หรือกล่องยุงเหล่านี้จะเลี้ยง และปล่อยยุงที่มีแบคทีเรียชื่อ Wolbachia ซึ่งเป็นแบคทีเรียที่เกิดขึ้นตามธรรมชาติ และมีคุณสมบัติในการลดความสามารถของยุงในการแพร่โรคบางชนิดไปสู่มนุษย์

The adult mosquitoes fly out and breed with local mosquitoes

  ยุงที่โตแล้วก็จะบินออกจากกล่องไปผสมพันธุ์กับยุงท้องถิ่น (ยุงที่ดูดเลือดปกติเป็นตัวเมียครับ)

This passes Wolbachia to their offspring and subsequent generations. 

  การผสมพันธุ์กันแบบนี้ก็จะเป็นแพร่เชื้อ Wolbachia ไปสู่รุ่นลูกและรุ่นหลานสืบไป

It’s hoped that Wolbachia will establish in the mosquito population, reducing the risk of dengue and Zika transmission.We do not expect people to notice an increase in mosquito numbers and we remind everyone to continue toprotect themselves against mosquito bites as usual.

  ทั้งสององค์กรคาดหวังว่าจะมียุงที่มีเชื้อ Wolbachia มากขึ้น ซึ่งก็จะเป็นการลดความเสี่ยงของการติดโรคอย่างไข้เลือดออกและไข้Zika และทางมหาวิทยาลัย James Cook และ Eliminate Dengue ก็ไม่คิดว่าการนำ Mozzie Box ไปใช้ จะทำให้ประชากรยุงเพิ่มขึ้นจนคนสังเกตได้ และก็ยังแนะนำให้ทุกคนป้องกันการโดนยุงกัดตามปกติ
